Megaupload data could be deleted starting Thursday
By John Callaham

If you have any important files that were hosted via the Megaupload file sharing service, you could have those files deleted in just a few days. The Associated Press (via NPR.com) reports that the companies that hosted the servers for Megaupload could start getting rid of those files beginning on Thursday.

The story reports that the U.S. Attorney's Office sent a letter on Friday to Carpathia Hosting and Cogent Communications Group, which owns the servers that hosted the Megaupload service. The letter said those companies could start deleting data that used the service on Thursday. Megaupload was shut down earlier this month by US officials and several of its employees, including its founder Kim Dotcom, were arrested on online piracy charges.

The U.S. Attorney's Office's letter also said that the government has made copies of some of the data found on Megaupload's servers. However, none of the servers were physically taken from their hosting locations.

Megaupload's attorney Ira Rothken says that he is trying to keep that data from being deleted from the servers. Not only could 50 million Megaupload users be affected, but Rothken says that those files could be helpful in Megaupload's defense against the online piracy charges. He added, "We're cautiously optimistic at this point that because the United States, as well as Megaupload, should have a common desire to protect consumers, that this type of agreement will get done."

us should re-open MU for a period of 72 hour to let people backup their file
at least give chance for us to save

BTW, I will never buy everything, all will be downloaded

That tells me the FBI has mirrored the entire server farm even if they claim only parts of it have been copied.

@vipking What files would you back up? I would be very careful going back there for any file unless you have no other copied and you can prove you own the rights to the files.

They are logging all IPs used to follow any MU links.

WDF, they've always been logging ip's. On their mainpage when you log in. it always tells you the last IP address you logged on previously.

Also for me. it doesn't matter if i retrieve copyright files and they monitor me. I have 10,000+ MU files and most of my filenames were renamed to the90skid@mywebsite.com. LOL so they don't need my ip address to find me anyway.

@The90sKid

I know it, you know it, but you might be surprised how many people do not know it, even now. Some people are so caught up in getting the files they do not notice their IP has been logged. If those few words save 1 person some troubles the time it took to type and post was well worth it.

Consider it a Public Service Announcement.

Why is it most of the people with files on these sites only care about themselves, the affiliate cash, and the files?

@marhahajcs I do not see it re-opening with any of the data that was on any of the seized servers still being there either.

I had no file in MU
but US should give non-copyright user getting back their file
just give the last chance for people downloading there and then fold MU

BTW, torrific.com closure really hurted me more......
