Looking for small VPS + shared hosting

Hi all.
I've had the misfortune of using Photonservers' VPS and shared hosting, and came to new levels of suckiness today when the VPS simply stopped working for no reason and support just said that I need to reinstall the OS since they have no clue what's going on there.

So, I'm moving from them mid-term. Still have 2 weeks that I've paid for, but I can't stand it anymore.

What I need:

1) Shared hosting for http://hd-dump.org

2) UNMANAGED VPS. I will want small basic offshore VPS. Will need to be able to to private Rapidleech with rar/unrar. I don't need much HDD. 10gb would be enough. Shared 100Mbit
I WANT you to limit the cpu usage so that I can rar/unrar as much as I like without being bothered about complaints of me overusing the server. Bandwidth consumption isn't high... would probably be about 60gb/day total upload+download. good speeds to Rapidshare are a must.

1 - For your shared hosting, you should look in the shared hosting section, or just ask around. You will soon find out who's good and who's not. -- Beware that many people will post here saying "go with us" or "check out our thread" etc, etc. (I would stay away from such hosts, self advertisers).

2 - As for VPS, I suggest you talk to OpenVServers, they are one of the best vps hosts i've seen, and I can personally vouch for them. Since their website is down still (i think), contact their sales at: Sales[AT]OpenVServers.biz :) Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice Sandino, but $38 is the cheapest VPS they have. Like I said I'm looking for a relatively basic VPS. I'll probably upgrade in the near future, but in the meanwhile, I need a small one.

I've tried a lot of shared hosts, and they've all been rather poor except for one shining star - Lisvo, which unfortunately has shut down.

r0ck - my only reservation with Startech is that they seem rather new... which is always risky in my books.

The site may be new but trust me my experience isn't new ;)

Actually the cheapest they have is about 17. it might be around 38 with cpanel not sure, but there are always alternatives to cpanel.

Also they could possibly make a custom vps for you, just ask :)


As for trying alot of hosts, I am sorry you've tried bad hosts, but i'm sure you haven't tried all of them here :P
 
@ woja, funny, same happened to me at Photonservers. I know what happened, they were hacked (my VPS was through an apache security hole) which obviously all VPSes have (I didn't host any website). They hacked, deleted all my shit, placed 220gb of data on my hdd (no clue what it was) when I was about to find out where it was, they immediately removed it (like, they were monitoring me). Have had serious downtimes (8+ hours) as well.

Funny. They told me I was the only one with the problem and started accsing me of changing ssh configuration files (if only I even knew how to do that).

@Golden.Brown. Sorry but your BW limitations are a bit low. I problably need more along the lines of 2TB+

@woja after futher analysis of your server we have seen that you are providing upload and download services to the public and not using it for your personal use only.

Secondly, @The Coon your server was hacked, as you could clearly see that the hacker had put a script on the index when you visit your IP (Just submit a ticket at our billing centre, and we will re-install for you the OS again, due to the hacker might have implemented some code on the system). And for woja, he was using this service for uploading and downloading purposes to the public.

I am sorry to say also, that this is an unmanaged VPS therefore we cant be able to provide full time support like downloading of backups, this is to be done by yourself.

Also as you know, webmin is a freeware open source and it can have some problems sometimes.

DJGaurav - please PM me a link of a site that is currently using the shared server you're offering me so I can host-tracker it.

The Photonserver shared host has now also packed up and is now giving me a database error.

So - my thoughts on Photonserver?

After 2 weeks with them.
VPS: Took over 48hours to get it initially even though they told me I'd get it within a few hours. Ignored my request to cancel and get a refund. Mysteriously completely stopped working now and needed an OS reinstallation. After opening this thread, they decide to suspend my account (not that I care honestly).

Shared hosting: LOADS of problems. Site goes slow all the time and is offline alot.
Right now both HD-DDL.com and HD-Dump.org are completely offline thanks to Photonservers' wonderful services.

I just hope they don't delete hd-dump.org because of this message before I move over to someone else.
 
@woja i dont see your hd-dump.org to be down. Please recheck its up and running fine.

Secondly, if you violate our TOS by providing your services free of charge to the public which we dont allow, we have no other choice then suspending you.

lol mate... I cleared it with you before I bought the VPS. I showed you the script and explained exactly what the uses are.

Anyway, bottom line - the VPS had traffic of less than TOTAL 40gb / day and CPU usage was almost non-existant (which I asked you to cap anyway).
It is nothing close to public rapidleech, nor does it abuse the server in any way, so it doesn' violate your TOC either. You're just looking for excuses to terminate a service that I don't want from you anymore anyway. I guess this is your way steering clear of giving refunds.

You still haven't answered why the server went mysteriously down and needed reformatting... not just for me apparently.

We do not allow public rapidleech or any other irregular behaviour or abuse of our servers, if found we will suspend your account and will not be unsuspended.

Examples of unacceptable material:
* Scam Sites (ex: Ebay/Paypal,CC/Password Scam sites)
* Mailbombers or any sort of spam sites
* IRC Bots
* Warez Hosting
* Hate Sites
* Roms / Emulators
* Pirated Software
* Proxies
* Hack programs and archives
* Malicious Scripts
* RapidLeech
* High Load Consuming Scripts

It clearly shows that i said yes becuase you mentioned that it was for premium use only. We do not allow public rapidleech on our servers.

Also we offer a 7 day money back which has been more than 7 days.

We cant really tell why or how it went down, as we are not sure you as the client did, as we dont go accessing any vps.

Also for the other person @The Coon it was not the same issue as yourself, his account was hacked and had a loop hole in the apache, which he has discovered and also has got hold of the IP that did that.
