Linus Torvalds on NVIDIA's non-Linux support: "Fuck you"

In a recently posted video, Linux creator Linus Torvalds tells NVIDIA, "Fuck you" when asked in a Q&A about the company's decision to not support the Linux operating system.

How does Linux creator Linus Torvalds feel about NVIDIA? He's not shy about giving his opinion about the graphics chip maker, who has so far not released any official drivers for the Linux platform. In a recently posted video on YouTube, Torvalds talks to a group of students in at Aalto University in Finland. Responding to a student's question about trying to get Linux running on her laptop with a NVIDIA-based graphics chip, Torvalds turns directly to the camera and says, "NVIDIA, Fuck you", while also giving the camera a well known gesture with his middle finger.

The Q&A exchange, which starts at the 48:10 mark in the video, has Torvalds state that NVIDIA is "the single worst company we've ever dealt with". He also says that NVIDIA's attitude toward Linux is odd since it sells its Tegra mobile chips in a lot of Android-based smartphones and tablets; Android has some of its roots in the Linux OS. However, he seems to also understand that NVIDIA isn't going to change its position toward Linux, saying, "We can't do anything about it, but it's life."

While he's not saying that "other companies are perfect either", Torvalds does say that NVIDIA has turned out to be "the exception rather than the rule" when it comes to Linux support from other businesses.

The linux father has spoken :P

Na but the Nouveau opensource drivers are really coming along nicely
we dont need these fuck faces the linux community is strong than them

Would like to join Linus in saying fuck you nVidia

You have to look at it from a business prospective as well. NVIDIA's primary market for their graphics cards are gamers playing the latest and greatest games. Those games ARE NOT being released for Linux. They have to weight the cost of developing maintaining and updating those drivers versus the actual revenue benefits or user adoption.

If you look at the latest numbers of consumers (not businesses and not for servers mind you) using Linux, the business case just isn't there.

^Whilst that may be true now it wont be soon

Steam is porting the source engine to linux so most of the valve games will be available on linux left4dead2 was screenshotted as running fine natively on Ubuntu

EA have started showing interest on making games run on linux

The old ID games all work natively already doom3 quake 3,4 ect

Their are loads of indie games that run on linux now World Of Goo being my favourite thanks to the humble indie bundle

If Nvidia does not want to support a growing platform because "the interest is not their" when clearly it is then that's their loss just means that when its time to upgrade my GPU i wont be choosing nvidia

Linux and ubuntu in general has really started picking up steam now loads of people nerdy or not have started using linux and with this windows 8 alot more people will be considering it ^^

^What ? do you even know who Liunus Torvalds is ?
You know most of the sites you visit run linux on their server dumbass try having a little more understanding about this post before saying something stupid like "fuck you too linux"

And what do you mean free is free i spent a good amount of fucking cash for my graphics card i expect support no matter what os i use

free is free, so dont complain & fuck you too Linux

what the fuck is that suppose to mean ?

did you even watch the video or read the article.

you obviously dont know what the fuck you are talking about. you just wanna throw in some words to make yourself look cool. but you just made yourself look like a dumbass.

if you didnt know. NVIDIA is the biggest chip maker for android smartphones and tablets. now seeing how android and linux are pretty much the same do you now understand the article -_-

NVIDIA responds to Linus Torvalds' critique: 'supporting Linux is important'

Linux creator Linus Torvalds didn't mince any words with his criticism of NVIDIA earlier this week -- calling it, among other things, the "single worst company we've ever dealt with." That unsurprisingly didn't go unnoticed by NVIDIA, which has today issued a statement that attempts clarify its position on the open source OS. It leads off by flatly stating that "supporting Linux is important to NVIDIA," before addressing some of the criticisms that have been leveled at it from Torvalds' and others. That includes its lack of Linux support for its Optimus laptop graphics, to which NVIDIA points to its support of the Bumblebee open source project, and its decision to not provide detailed documentation on all of its GPU internals -- on that, it says that it's "made a decision to support Linux on our GPUs by leveraging NVIDIA common code, rather than the Linux common infrastructure." The company goes on to note that it supports a variety of GPUs on Linux and is an active participant in the ARM Linux kernel, but acknowledges that it's position "may not please everyone." We're going to go out on a limb and guess that includes Torvalds. Hit the source link below for the full statement.

to which NVIDIA points to its support of the Bumblebee open source project
That opensource project was started because they could not be fucked to support it themselves and their expensive ass chips were not working and people wanted it to work because they paid for it

what kind of answer is that anyway all they are doing is showing that they are lazy and the linux community is having to support it themselves

Im glad what Linus said has ruffled a few feathers in nvidia

I was watching the entire video a few days ago before 9001 sites posted the "fuck you" thing. Laughed pretty hard when he gave nVidia the finger out of nowhere. Whether you're a fan of Linux or not you just gotta love Linus. He always speaks how he feels and his words aren't influenced by big bags of $$$ from other companies.

Also check 1:00:30 for the reaction of an nV employe and Linus his response lol, "people who feel offended should be offended".

lol
have watched the complete video
thanks for the post...
anyway, posting the snaps taken from my phone (i know its hard for the guys to stream till 50 mins)

Linus is right. Have you guys read about the bumblebee project? Nvidia said they would work together with bumblebee to get drivers working for Linux distros but instead all Nvidia did was to give them a link to their windows driver file and they have to reverse engineer it.
