Don't connect to any (semi)public networks/wifi's. A firewall doesn't protect you against packetsniffing etc. so make sure your on a valid/non-faked https.
Try to use VPN/SSH tunnels to your servers for browsing, this encrypts your traffic.
And most importantly, don't use Windows! (Thrust me I know this shit)

It's quite easy. Avoid downloading any kind of cracked applications, they might be posted by a trusted uploader, but you can't know for sure that he posted it, as his account on that site might be compromised. Change your security question and the password of the mail every few weeks. Don't visit suspicious porn sites, and most important, never register on random sites because you don't know these things:
1. They might be saving passwords in plain text.
2. They might be selling emails of their users to spammers.
3. They might be using regular MD5 encryption, which isn't salted, and thus it can be easily decrypted if password isn't strong.
That's all I guess..

Download only nessecary items, look for out for trusted uploaders and their own content! try not to download applications mostly.
Don't save browser passwords, use different passwords on sites - if a hacker gets your password and it's your password for everything your fucked!

no its not ! you guyz can be hacked without even downloading a file, just having your pc on connected to the net is enough for them to load their programs in your damn RAM !!

Well, there are only few other ways to hack someone, without making him to download an infected application or file. I'll try to explain the stalking method..
Stalking is one of the easiest methods to gain some info on the person, and some of that info can be obviously used to reset his accounts on various Internet communities, social network sites, etc, etc.
First thing you'd have to do is to lookup his username on Google, if search returns no results, you'd have to get his mail address, after you get his mail address you'll look it up on social network sites, if he has an profile on Facebook or any other social network site, you have his first and last name now, which will help you to determine where he lives, does he have profiles on other sites, was he mentioned on some news portals, etc, etc.
Some of the social network sites display DOB (date of birth) to guests, and some don't. In order to get his DOB on Facebook, you'd have to add him as a friend via some fake account, chances to be accepted as a friend when you don't have a profile picture are quite low, so you should make it to look like a profile that's used quite often. Let's say he accepted you as a friend, you can see his Facebook profile now, and DOB, you can go and try Password reset for his mail account, now here's the tricky part.
Security questions, most of the people use stupid security questions, such as:
- Name of the pet
- Mother's birthplace
- DOB of the boyfriend/girlfriend
- Favorite movie
- Favorite song
You can get all of that by checking what they post on Internet communities, while you can get name of their pet by checking their album on Facebook, as most of them have pictures of their pets.
Things you have learned from this post are: don't use such security questions, don't register Facebook profile under mail address that you're using for Internet communities, don't use same username everywhere, etc.

People who cannot think right are the reason why so many PCs get infected, just keep your OS up to date and use Win 7 or Vista because the way they are programmed - by design - makes you safer.
I've been without any kind of protection software since 2006 now and I can say for sure I was never infected ever since not because I'm a genius but because common sense always prevails.
Huge Kudos to the size of Microsoft's balls for pissing off so many people yet doing the right thing which is making Windows much much more secure.
