How do PreDB's run?

Another curious question.

What exactly causes a PreDB like ORLYDB.com to run? A lot of PHP scripting, I guess, but what is their source? And specifically for ORLYDB, how do they manage to add the file size and nuke reason to a small coloured "bubble" next to the specified release?

Whenever a group releases something there are some super elite channels that announce everything, they most likely get's relayed to another channel where the announce is processed most likely via a PHP script or via TCL (an irc scripting language...)

EDIT: If you are looking to start a site like that you will have to gain access to one of these private channels which most likely won't be happening lol :D

Sources are generally private and decently difficult to obtain (expecially if you want the full pre commands inc addnfo, addjpeg etc).

@Whoo: "you will have to gain access to one of these private channels which most likely won't be happening lol". I might not get access to a private PRE channel, but I have Scene access, so "most likely won't be happening" is kind of a fail to say xD

There are a few IRC channels dedicated to scene releases. They will notify whenever there's a scene release or you can use RSS feeds of some private trackers like SCC but teh IRC channels are teh best.

It's kind of fail having scene axx and not knowing how a simple pre works. Groups release to topsites, release gets announced on pre channels (irc) and orlydb is prolly just a bot idling in a irc pre channel.

I know how The Scene works. I don't know PreDB's, and do you see that in my name? No, because I don't use many PreDB's. I know everything about release groups, FTPs etc., but not about Preing.

And FYI, you guys actually focus more on me not knowing what it is than you do at answering my question. Thanks for your help Whoo and tehlolkid, but you others shouldn't even have posted as those comments didn't help anybody... -.- but cya, I'll go download some games now :D

PreDBs are a major part of The Scene. But meh, you probably wouldn't even know what racing is and what the importance of a good pre is but wtv. And actually I DID help with my previous post even though this one isn't much help.

I'm unsubscribing from this thread now. It's useless to post a question here on WJ, you only get replies as if your question is the world's most stupid one. Try to have a nicer tone next time. You will never get into a topsite with that behavior.

Thanks for the answers, please lock this thread now or let it die or something. I got the info I was looking for and a lot of unnecessary replies.

You brought this onto yourself. Nobody likes a gloater.

I'm talking about your last sentence there. Whoo actually helped you and you acting stupid smart and dissed him. Also, stop acting like a Scene expert when you clearly aren't. Woop-de-fucking-doo, you have 0sec FTP axx. Which is NOT topsite axx. Get your facts right.

"Enter the TopSite. A TopSite is a computer system usually operating in a Country where Copyright laws and policies are either better or not in place. TopSites are used by Release Groups to get their releases out in the wild, Thou many would complain that their releases are TOO out in the wild. Release Groups themselves have a chain of command. A Courier for a release group is usually a member with access to several sites, At least one of which would be a TopSite. A TopSite is defined by being linked to a PreDB Script, When a Directory is created and a Upload is completed at a TopSite an entry is made into the PreDB which is then echo'd and relayed around the world by hundreds of people. Its not uncommon for the actual TIME of a release to differ by a few minutes depending on which source you check."

Quote from link above

"Within the vast confines of the internet there exists a loosely constructed database of every pirated release by every group from iND to SKiDROW to DEViANCE. This database consists of all the info that can be gleaned from the releases of time past. Such as Date, Size, Parts, Time, Nuked?, Group, Duped, and most importantly Section."

That 0sec FTP scene went down and I got linked to a Topsite instead. So my facts were right ;)

And FYI, I wasn't originally trying to be mean. I asked a curious question on the start of this topic and received a bunch of fucked up "you have Scene in your name and don't know how a PreDB works?". It's at that point I understood people here are not good at answering questions. I got angry as I had tried to ask nicely and that went on to this. I wouldn't educate anyone about The Scene. I'm in it because I help doing coding. You guys clearly know more about The Scene, which is why I asked here for explanations. I thought you would take that as a compliment, but then the rude comments stated something different...

EDIT: And since when did I ever say I was a Scene expert? The reason I asked is because I'm NOT...

Whats going on here?

If you have access to a topsite but don't know what a predb is, it must be a very very low quality and/or unofficial topsite.

As for how predbs work, you need access to a very good source but they are rather hard to find. I've had (and still have) various sources like this but they aren't easy to get into, especially if all you wanna do is relay it.

The reason everyone seems to be doubting you and what not is because you seem to lack knowledge and experience of the scene. Pretty much every proper scene member knows exactly how it works and knows everything about every part of it, hence why it seems questionable that you believe you're one such person.

On a side note, do not even consider making a predb. The scene launched an attack on many, many public predbs recently, which also explains why several large ones went down or are still down. There was an nfo for this pre'd, explaining the situation, but i seem to have lost it. Basically its a bad idea.

Thanks for the info :) and to explain: I'm not actually a 'Scene member'. I'm just in their coding team. I'm not a group or anything like that, so that's why I don't know this stuff. I only partially do the coding parts.
