UK Considers Opt-in Freedom Of Speech

Rick Falkvinge, The Pirate Party

Freedom of Speech – Andrew Lee:

As outdated as a broken record, the UK is once again considering a plan to force Internet Service Providers to censor adult content online.

With the recent censorship of The Pirate Bay being forced onto UK ISPs, and Virgin Media’s quick follow through thereof, it is evident that the captain of the ship is steering it into an iceberg. It is universally agreed that Albert Einstein was a genius, and he defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over and over again expecting different results.†So why, exactly, does the UK Government and David Cameron expect the results to be any different when heading down this path than that of North Korea, who censors everything?

The Opt-In Plan

The new plan to censor adult content involves allowing ISP customers to check a box which indicates that they are willing to, or desire to, view adult material online. Just like SOPA and PIPA, the move is touted as a way to protect children online, since children are not exposed to sexually explicit material in Lady Gaga’s music videos. However, without a need for an explanation, this is an invasion of privacy on so many levels.

Casting a Shadow over the internet is Shady.

The opt-in plan is corrupt. To begin, as many journalists have already pointed out, whoever governs the lists and boundaries of censored content will essentially have control over the internet comparable to the current media conglomerates. Secondly, it should be up to parents to protect their children from provocative online content. A plethora of tools already exists that can censor racy content online, such as Net Nanny amongst others.

Additionally, if the UK Government really wants to run companies like Net Nanny out of business, and parents would like to protect their children, then the opt-in program should be an opt-in to censorship instead of an opt-in to un-censorship. This would protect the privacy of many without taking away the freedoms of access to content. However, this would weaken the government’s totalitarian control over censorship.

Have the Government’s Prohibitions Worked in History?

Myself, journalists, and readers of this article, of course, will never be able to make perfect decisions and predict the future. However, what we as a society have evolved to be able to do is analyze mistakes in history and make sure to never repeat them again. When is the last time prohibition has worked out? Did it work on alcohol? Did it work on drugs? While this is not an essay on prohibition, it is a proven fact in history that prohibition leads to organized crime while not really helping to prohibit that which is prohibited in the least. It simply drives it underground and completely out of the control of the government. Just ask El Chapo! Tor will definitely earn itself a grand world tour.

A Battle of Control

To make a long story short, with every little “win†the government makes with new legislations on censorships, surveillance and the overall removal of our privacy, each generation grows up in a different setting where this new environment is the “norm.†In other words, it is the slow and steady desensitization of society to accept full and complete subordination to the totalitarian rulers who are making their come back. It is quite evident that the world of rulers and peasants is coming back, just ask the 1%. As new laws continue to be made in favor of rulers, all of society outside of the ruling class will lose the opportunity to live life and fulfill their dreams.

Opt-in is not an option.
END

What do you guys think about this, how the heck can any Government prevent us end users for using the internet in any way we choose to do so. We PAY our ISPs for that service, and surely if they start to follow the different Governments and Courts rules on this, wouldn`t those same ISPs start to lose serious money

All it would take is for some group of gurus to set up
a Global ISP, for service in any country to solve this
problem. It would of course have to be offshore, so it cant be traced, but this can be done, in a similar way that Pirate Radio used to do many years ago.

Any thoughts

Contrary to popular belief ips's cant actually watch what their customers are looking at due to privacy laws, Well here in Europe any way yanks have a different problem look at google's privacy policy it was in breach of eu privacy law and they had to fix it.

I think it would be extremely difficult to block all adult websites and seems somewhat pointless to even try, Their are so many and even more are made everyday it will just cause an expensive cat and mouse chase

As for blocking TPB i am extremely disappointed in the uk and Europe for allowing this kind of censorship, This is like communism you cant fucking tell me what i can and cant visit im going to continue downloading what i want from TPB, But i cant believe that the courts are on side with these mpaa riaa crooks it does feel like our privacy is slowly dripping down the drain

Being a little patriotic here but i have lost faith in the uk the fucking home secretary allowed a British uni student to get extradited to the us for something he did that was legal in this country.

The us is a pointless super power that just abuses its position and does not care about its own people just cares about its own status with other countries and our country bending over to them and following things they do its laughable quite frankly.

I would also like to know if anyone know what eu laws the uk is breaching here i remember reading that they were breaching one but i don't really know much about law unfortunately, We have to take a stand against this otherwise it will just continue.

So yea that's my little rant really quite angry about all this being allowed

Edit: Oh yea one way of stopping this mayhem is to vote for the pirate party

^That is the uk one but i think they have one in most countries in Europe

'Rick is the founder of the first Pirate Party and is a political evangelist, travelling around Europe and the world to talk and write about ideas of a sensible information policy. He has a tech entrepreneur background and loves whisky',,, my kind of guy!!! -LBB

I personally think its disgusting that its even being discussed :( I think the Government needs to sort out some of there mountains of debt before they go spending billions trying to take down sites to make themselves a super-power.

One thing i don't understand, NL signed into the Network-Neutral Status meaning they can host just about anything without any legal implications, However they are a part of the EU so how can they continue to be a part of the EU without losing this status? It's a very strange setup they have going on over there.

I say we should be free to look at what we want to, And the fact TPB is blocked here in the UK is even worse! Time for the UK to lunch it's own "Great Firewall" lol.

EASY! We just get everyone in the world.
Shit everyone hates the USA, it is not going to be that hard to take them down and then let someone else take over.
For UK is small easy bite.

In history, every great Empire has fallen,,,,,,the US is next. They can never recover from the debt they are in, countries like China, India etc are becoming more and more wealthy......

Canada is still the best, steady and a great place to live. :sun:
