Add this to your style.css file:

.post-tags {
clear: none !important;
float: left;
width: 220px;
}

Increase the width to 280px if you want 4 columns, but there will be too much space.

Thanks for the code but I was wondering if there was a way to get all the letters at the top of the page like..
A B C D E F G.…
Such that when one clicks on a letter of the alphabet it would jump to the part of the list containing all tags starting with the said alphabet.
So for instance if I open the tag-index page, right on the top I’d see the horizontal letter listing. When I click ‘G’ it would take me to the part of the page containing all tags starting with the letter ‘G’.

How I can do this?

Yeah, well, that's another deal which requires a bit more coding. You can check this plugin here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/azindex/ - You could edit it to fetch tags instead of posts.
