Hi everyone,

I'd like to setup a home server to host my own website.
What's your thoughts about setting up a home server ?
Any useful advice, recommendation, tips, anything ?
Comments are most welcome.

Regards.

Safest thing you could possibly do ;)

Well that depends on your ISP, and your electric company. I myself have a small datacenter at home. 1 firewall (top) and 2 servers (1 for testing). I mainly use them to download at night, but also to backup my websites.
Here on my Island its hard to have a good uptime because of my poor ISP, and we have blackouts about once a month (at least). So yeah.. Its pretty fun to own your own server/datacenter :P

Check here for more info ;)

BTW, these photo's are old, I took them when I was still setting them up (1 year ago)

ItsmYarD, Thanks, I agree about the fiber connection and planning to upgrade soon, but a $3k is way too high for me, as I said earlier, I will be hosting my own website(s) by using old machines, It'll be for personal use only as CuraHack does.

CuraHack, yes, it's pretty nice to have your own data-center at home and fun too :)

one last thing, is 10mbps good as bandwidth speed ? I currently have a 2mbps.

Comments are most welcome.

It would depend on how many connections to your serer you are expecting over the internet and the type of content. Also if you will be using the connection for anything else than your server.

Depends on the amount of traffic your sites will get, your internet connection (also the quality of the connection to Int'l users).

I used to host my sites from home on a 2Mb/256kb connection in a virtual machine on my Windows PC. Everything worked sweet until the sites grew and my connection became the bottleneck.
