it shouldn't be a problem for you to take a shared-hosting
if you tell us, what bandwidth you have and how many space you require, it's easier to pick a host.
and what's your price-limit?

i suggest you'll have about 20-50Gb traffic (depending on your theme and where you're hosting your pictures)
a VPS is too big - i would say. And it has to be managed.
with ~1GB of files.

I will not suggest a host, but i will give you some insight as to what to look for.

HDD Space: 1-5gb (depending on forum uploads and such)
Bandwidth: 3-10gb (forums usually have cache systems so can heavily remove bandwidth usage and also some image optimization and coding optimized can drastically lower usage.)
Ram Memory: 256+ (128mb is standard for smaller forums like yours)
Server Type: nGinx (it helps with speed and also lower bandwidth usage, but apache should be fine.)

This is the normal specs any actual real host will know for forum boards which can also change due to content and visitors so don't let them trick you into anymore resources which are not needed.

Thank you for your answers, i think up to 100GB traffic Bandwidth, 10gb HD

I have approx 50 - 70 visitors but i am on shared host and forum works like a charm consider what they said above.
are 50-70 users online at any given moment? how many visits per day?

There is a big difference using shared hosting and running your own VPS server. I would stick with shared hosting until your shared hosting provider says you generate too much memory/CPU load or you could setup a remote MySQL server to offset that MySQL load to continue to use shared hosting.

On shared hosting this would reduce mysql usage and create a higher load on php due to external connections. Also the host must allow external connections for port 3306.

that's a lot traffic o.o
do you host all your pictures yourself?
are you growing fast?
if not, get a shared-plan that is just a little bit above your requirements.
e.g. (taking the list from above)
http://www.altushost.com/web-hosting.html at least bronce
http://www.servnode.com/shared.php basic or medium-plan
http://www.knownsrv.com/shared.php NL V2
http://www.ruskahost.com/shared.html basic or starter
for more infos and other companies, check the Shared-Section here in the forum.

i wouldn't spend that much money. about 5$ should be enough. 10$ would be the absolut max i would spend - considering the relatively small forum and the not so problematic content.
( i hope you see 5-10$ as "not so expensive" ^^' )
