I still use a pad with a optical mouse. Depending on how your computer desk was finished has a lot to do with how smooth your optical mouse will work. I have had opticals that would barley pick up on some wood finishes.
Also the mouse pad seems to slow your scrolling speed down till its perfect . The pad creates just enough friction for a smooth scroll. I have used a mouse pad for years and when its removed i noticed huge difference in how my mouse functions.
Plus i kinda grew attached to my mouse pad that has been under my arm for over 10 years
Using a Mousepad is not really something I would say is obsolete. The problem with me is that most of our tables are Glass and well... Optical Mice does not do too well with Glass. So I need something to get it working and the best solution is an Mousey Pad. :P
