The following is a brief list of items web designers, web developers, and web optimizers should try to avoid when performing SEO on a website:

1) Splash pages:

Not only splash pages are bad for SEO, it’s also high on the usability NO list. Take this one step further, sometimes these pages are 100% flash, making it impossible for search engines to spider the page, and follow the link.

2) Flash Menus that can’t be spidered:

Many designers make this mistake by using Flash menus such as those fade-in/out and animated menus. Yep, sometimes they look the business, but they can’t be seen by the search engines; and thus the links in the Flash menu will not be followed.

3) Image and Flash Content:

Dont embed important content (such as target keywords) in Flash and images

4) Ajax heavy sites

Dont try to impress too much, specifically by deploying massive Ajax features (particularly for navigation purposes), as this is a big SEO mistake.

5) Unfriendly URLs:

Most blog or CMS platforms have a friendly URL feature built-in, however, not every blogger is taking advantage of this. Friendly URL’s are good for both your human audience and the search engines. The URL is also an important spot where your keywords should appear.

Hey mate, thanks fr sharing. I have a quick question, I am currently running an adult website and upon first visit the user is requested to verify their age with a little warning. Will this effect SEO at all?

See this is what happens when you just copy and paste a tutorial from another site that's years old.
For starters hardly anyone uses flash now as you can do amazing things in HTML5 and JS.
Secondly keywords in a url no longer have an impact like they used to a few years ago although it's still good to help navigation and site structure.
Finally your part about ajax is also out of date. Google can now easily crawl ajax and understand it. They have a tutorial about how you can make your ajax easily crawlable http://code.google.com/web/ajaxcrawling/docs/getting-started.html

In fact you've just committed the most important SEO mistakes which is Duplicate Content. This is now far more important than any other mistake you've listed.

Please don't copy tutorials that are years old from other sites to increase your post count or rep.

You'll notice this original version which originally had 9 points is from 7th May 2009 and it doesn't take a mathematician to work out May 2009 is more than 3 days ago. http://www.isiteweb.com/blog/2009/05/avoiding-top-seo-mistakes-2/
oh and feel free to apologize after you check the date on this.

^ Uhm, basically it was posted years ago  Just cause you didn't see it doesn't mean it isn't over 2 years old.

SEO

Using H1 tags too much, bolding too many text, too much links, and of course too many bad links.

Duplicated content, no href info at images, using http:// and http://www can also decrease ranking. best is to use one or the other. This can be done via htaccess rewrite rules.

The points are old but now there many many more factors to that should be avoided while doing SEO. On SEOMoz they have mentioned nearly about 17 factors that should be avoided ( both for on page & off page seo).

Its true that flash content can't be crawled by google.

But they can crawl the flash file and see generally what is it about (file name and such)
