The basic Macbook and Macbook Air would be under your price range, I used to have a Mac and I suggest him to give it a go with one as it's an awesome experience.
i d go for a core i3 or core i5 with 3GB DDR3 ram. there are 2 brands i would recommend. Compaq - Price is cheap, Toshiba - price is bit expensive but bellow $1000 for sure / good for hard use.
i know that its not that exp - HP/Compaq etc.. Toshiba core i3 with 3GB/4GB DDR3 will cost somewhere around USD 700 and HP/Compaq around USD 550 (where i live)
