This is indeed funny but for dummies like me its really a heck.
Ohk so what my problem really is that i bought a VPS.
I got details of my VPS.
The following details i got:
I am awaiting my directAdmin details.
Now i know i have something to do from domain registrar.
I have my domain registered at www.1and1.com
Now while buying the domain i was asked 3 things:
1. Server name: (server.mydomainname.com)
2. Name Server 1: (ns1.mydomainname.com)
3. Name Server 2: (ns2.mydomainname.com)
The things that i mentioned in bracket were what i entered.
Now, what!
I know i need to create name servers. But 1and1.com do not have special provisions for registering name servers.
As reported by 1and1 i was told to create subdomains and then propogate those to my ip address.
Now my question starts here:
1. How many sub-domains am i required to create?
2. If only 2 subdomains, (ie ns1.mydomainname.com, and ns2.mydomainname.com) then most probably i think i need to change the DNS setting to my 2 ip addresses which i mentioned earlier.
But if 3 which includes my hostname then what all are required to be entered in the DNS settings?
3. While editing my DNS setting i am getting 2 things to edit.
a. IP address (A record) * (where there is a field to fill ip address.
b. Mail server (MX record) * Now here there are 2 options, 1&1 mail server, Other mail server, Which one to select.
On selecting Other mail serverit asks for:
MX 1 / Prio
MX 2 / Prio
4. At last i think most probably i am reuired to point out my main domain over the 2 subdomains (ns1.mydomainname.com, or ns2.mydomainname.com) or 3 subdomains (ns1.mydomainname.com, ns2.mydomainname.com and server.mydomainname.com)
5. Do i need to do anything else.?
