Have you heard of namecoin, it's a derivation of bitcoin. A completely decentralized domain name system, that runs on a couple dns servers. Is it worth investing machine to generate domains? Do you think browsers will adopt it?
The value of the bitcoins is still growing so it is possible that investing in such domains will be profitable. Of course, only some of the names should be genuinely valuable.
Anyone can setup their own crappy little DNS servers to resolve custom TLDs, you just have to get people to alter their DNS settings to point to yours rather than their ISP's.
This will NEVER be implemented in browsers, it will never take off because it has been tried a thousand times and is the most ridiculous idea ever.
Hell, I could go set one up now to resolve *.jmz domains, but would anyone care enough to go alter their DNS config just so they can resolve them? Hell no.
