Apache Stops Responding

Been having a problem on one of my machines. Apache will randomly (2-3 times a day) stop responding for about 60 seconds or so.


Nothing relevant in the error logs.


Maxclients is set to 1,000 and there are only 100 or so httpd processes shown in the ps command while it's down.


Immediately after it goes back up I can check the status page, and generally there are about 100 processes in use there as well.


Any suggestions?

Setup some kind of uptime monitor and when monitor cant quickly get his request processed by apache, run some bash script that will run commands you would like to run when apache is not responding. Let output be sent to you via email or logged into an file. Probably you want to see apache status page, processes, memory values, top -c n1 output, maybe command to show IPs and how many connections they have to your server. Use google to discover right commands and ways.
