The National Security Agency and the FBI are tapping directly into the central servers of nine leading U.S. Internet companies, extracting audio and video chats, photographs, e-mails, documents, and connection logs that enable analysts to track foreign targets, according to a top-secret document obtained by The Washington Post.

The program, code-named PRISM, has not been made public until now. It may be the first of its kind. The NSA prides itself on stealing secrets and breaking codes, and it is accustomed to corporate partnerships that help it divert data traffic or sidestep barriers. But there has never been a Google or Facebook before, and it is unlikely that there are richer troves of valuable intelligence than the ones in Silicon Valley.

Equally unusual is the way the NSA extracts what it wants, according to the document: “Collection directly from the servers of these U.S. Service Providers: Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, Apple.”

London’s Guardian newspaper reported Friday that GCHQ, Britain’s equivalent of the NSA, also has been secretly gathering intelligence from the same internet companies through an operation set up by the NSA.

Anonymous have also leaked 13 documents related to the issue:
In the wake of last night’s revelation that everyone in the world has a creepy NSA-shaped stalker, defenders of online liberty and generally angry internet people Anonymous have leaked a treasure trove of NSA documents, including seriously important stuff like the US Department of Defense’s ‘Strategic Vision’ for controlling the internet.

The documents — 13 in total — were posted online, along with an accompanying message full of the normal Anonymous bluster: people won’t be silenced, they have the memory of trivia-master elephants, the governments of the world will fall, your average press release really.

There has been a lot of controversy around this over the past few days now.

Lots of denials by corporations, explanations by governments, and general bullshit. We all can figure out that this is happening, and on a much bigger scale than it what was originally thought to be.

An in-depth article on the daily mirror (UK newspaper):

Revealed: Google and Facebook DID allow NSA access to data and were in talks to set up 'spying rooms' despite denials by Zuckerberg and Page over PRISM project
  • Mark Zuckerberg and Larry Page both issued blustery statements over recent media reports they gave the National Security Agency officials access to their troves of user information
  • Now sources say both tech giants were in discussion about specific ways to give U.S. officials access to their data using virtual classified information reading rooms
  • Companies are all compelled by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to hand over any information requested under the law, but they're not required to make access easier
  • PRISM data-mining program was launched in 2007 with approval from special federal judges
  • Apple, Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, YouTube, Skype, AOL and PalTalk are involved in spying program
  • The UK has had access to the PRISM data since at least 2010
  • Details of data collection were outlined in classified 41-slide PowerPoint presentation that was leaked by intelligence officer

"You have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide" - oh, how I wish this statement was true.

Why can't these big companies just be fucking honest and save what little rep they had after this especially google (who i thought would look after my data), I'm really disappointed and the fact that Twitter is absent from this list proves they knew about prism because Twitter is very anti giving users info out and they would never cooperate.

A statement by Julian Assange from 2011:

Seeing how they are still trying to prosecute him, it's obvious they are scared of the knowlegde he and other whislteblowers have about what is happening 'behind the scenes'.

Bit pissed off that the media for picking and choosing info. For example the original Washington Post article was edited to correct the facts, NSA released a statement saying they don't have direct access, the guy who leaked the info has come out and is currently in Hong Kong and these classified information reading rooms provide an extra layer of security between the companies and the Government.

The media are reporting on the parts and in ways that will make them money. Its an important topic but not all the parts are getting reported equally and there's a lot more to this story.

FYI; my problems with the media, not WJ or its members.

What does WJ's members have to do with this? O_o

I like to keep an open mind about this. Ever thought that they might be lying?

Ever thought that they were forced to edit a correct story into one which is misleading by the very same people who want to hide the truth from you?

You can't deny that the powerpoint presentation showed exactly when they began accessing the data.

Please read more than what you see in the mainstream news and media.

Its funny how when a government body or autority figure breaks the law they say that they "circumvented the law" or "took extreme measures". But when anyone else does, they're called criminals.

I could go on about this topic forever, but I'm sure those of you who want to know more can do your own research.

Sorry SJ. I'm just commenting about the availability of all information, that's all I was highlighting in my reply.

If I got into the content of the information that would take more than the small paragraph reply I posted.
