Well i have not used any WordPress plugins for SEO purpose and i don't think it required.No idea about vbulletin plugins.

May be Google may encountered an error to accessing your sitemap.Try to check whether it can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit again and again for few times.Hope it will work.

KevinCrew what you say about grey hat techniques.Because for black hat techniques,once Google does place a penalty on a website it could take months if not years for the penalty to be removed.

I think you should go for some link building tactics like article submission,social bookmarking and networking,Press release,RSS feed,blog posting,guest blogging,forum posting,video submission,e.t.c.

Some directories what i prefer are DMOZ,Yahoo,V7N,business,bloggeries,urlmoz, directory.ezweb-tools,e.t.c.But remember directories don't approved link immediately specially they are if you applied for free or regular links.
