Do people really need smart phones?

Over the last few years smart phones are becoming more and more popular.

But the typical cost of buying a smart phone and calls, texts, data charges on an 18 month contract can be over $1000.

I can understand business people having smart phones to check their email, business stories etc.


But why do the rest of the people need to spend such ridiculous amounts of money on a smart phone.

There are many important apps like Dropbox which can be really useful and with a smartphone, you can access them any time.

I personally need one as it's useful for my college work.
 
Yes you really do. Think about it.. A old nokia now could not do anything as near to what a iPhone can. I check my emails, shop, banking... Pfttt who needs a laptop.

No ,there is no REAL need. REAL need that you have in your life is clean water and air, food and shelter. Not smartphone.

Todays marketing is about creating a need, which you as a targetted customer, have absolutelly no idea. They will make you think, that you need it. Not only that you are not realizing that, you'll defend that at all cost. You will repeat what you've learned from the commercials. They will make several types of commercials, and you will be caught in one of them, because they 'researched' types of people, and which story generally works as appealing. Some beautiful girl, businessman, grandparents, girl-boyfriend, money, or whatever they have in their sleeves that will work on you. In one of these, you'll find your own story, and try to recognize yourself. That's how marketing works. If you don't have a need, you will.
 
Yes there is a real need @ CV.

I need a smart phone to navigate efficiently and map my routes I plan on taking when I go shopping. Furthermore I love my Amazon barcode reader and eBay application that allows me to look up the values of items instantaneously. Whereas before I would have to place a phone call to someone at the office to run a price check for me. I use my smart phone for taking pictures of products, because it's a quick snap, unlike some of the higher end cameras that just take too long to take a picture. I like how fast the phone works. The need to have a cellphone period so that I can be reached 24 hours a day if needed. Also my PayPal application that allows me to see any incoming payments and make payments immediately. There are other applications that I also use such as Stock Manager & Weather Forecasting all of which are important to what I do.

A $1,000 investment for 18 months is well worth it in my opinion. Simply because it makes what I do much more simplified and essentially I am running more efficiently which allows me to take in more profits at the end of the day.
 
Okay, lets put this in simple terms. I'm paying about £45 per month for my smartphone usage. That comes with all the minutes, text and data I need. On a 2-year contract. Overall, it works out to under £1.50 per day (about $2.30).

So, for £1.50 per day I have all this at my fingertips:
- GPS - google maps, navigation, driving directions
- Email - gmail, hotmail, yahoo
- Calendar - keeps me organised
- Word processing - documents, spreadsheets, viewing pdfs
- Internet - can browse the internet almost everywhere
- Camera - high megapixel, video capture, photo editing
- Music - smartphones are good music players
- Video playback - personal television, movies, etc.
- News - personalised news and blog updates
- Games - shit load of games apps
- Social networking - facebook, twitter, etc.
- Phone and Text - obviously the last thing on the list

I use pretty much everything on the above list, and I'm sure most people with a smartphone use most of the obove.


You still think that its a ridiculous price to pay for a smartphone?
 
I think we should go back to bongos.

For me a smartphone is not necessary although I have a Samsung S3. It might be handy at times, but mostly what I use is calling and receiving calls.

My friend has a 5 year old $20 Samsung telephone and I never feel I am privileged to have a smartphone. And he can put it anywhere, with nobody attempting to steal it.
 
Its really hard to say what the op is saying is true for everyone.


  • For maps we have GPS devices
  • For music we have IPODS & mp3/CD players
  • Calenders are still being made you know?
  • News is being shown and heard on tv & radio
  • Documents are really hard to read if its a multi page
  • Video streaming is hard to do since you are being limited and throttled (depending on company and plans
  • Social Networking... Get a life.. You can txt or video call the people if needed
  • Internet has been around since even the older wap 1.0 days
I have always argued as to why non-techie or photogenic people need smart phones.

Most carry 500$ worth of mobile processing power to just facebook, txt, call, watch youtube, play angry birds... There is no reason for that...


People like me and most other's who have business's have our phones to ssh, web server/panel apps made for android/ios to control hosting, video/voice calls for business and personal use, SMS for quick conversations, Viewing desktop web sites when needed without having to scroll like crazy just to view paragraphs.
