Vps is not good as your own host. There are so many bugs can easilly occur when running a website on VPS. I vote for the solution that expand your host space

ask your provider to give your full back up to your site . or you can do it yourself from the cpanel ( backup option )

then upload it to your VPS and from restore function at Cpanel you can restore your site

Yes, a VPS would give more resources for your website, such as RAM/CPU.

I suggest you get a "managed" VPS.

I think the most logical and useful time to transfer is when your website grows up and you feel that the resources provided are not enough anymore (the logical way to transfer to VPS is from shared hosting in most of the cases, which is mostly used for small individual sites and blogs). So finally, when your website's network speed slows down because of a high traffic - sign up for VPS which will provide you with better resources to cover your new needs.

To be honest I dont see a reason for Shared hosting alltogether.
A few years back, a 128MB (RAM) VPS used to cost $10 per month. Now a simple webserver VPS costs the same as a Shared hosting account. I dont see a reason why not get a VPS in the first place. Ypu can install anything you want, adjust any setting you want and learn some interesting things. Shared hosting is for Business customers who cannot be bothered with managing a server.

I agree with Maniac_, VPS are so cheap nowadays they're comparable to shared hosting, but with the benefit of having full control over your server. We use digital ocean for cheap VPS with fast SSDs for our front-end stuff. Leaseweb or Eurovps for larger storage on HDs.

I think you should know about the pros and cons of VPS

Benefit:

  • A VPS hosting account is less expensive than a full dedicated hosting plan that uses a physical server.
  • Many VPS plans can be customized to meet your needs so you pay for what you want but you do not need to deal with any features you will never need.
  • Many VPS hosting plans are easily scalable. You can start off in your virtual environment with the minimum amount of resources you need and then as you grow gradually increase your hosting plan to accommodate your needs. You do not have to pay for excessive resources you have not yet grown into.
  • You have a lot more control over your virtual server than you do with shared hosting. You will likely have root access and the ability to use scripts that may not be allowed in the shared hosting environment.
  • You have the same technical support as with shared hosting for most issues
  • You can choose from semi managed hosting where the web host handles some maintenance and fully managed services.

Disadvantages:

VPS hosting, in theory, is a great way to have the services of a dedicated server but without the cost associated with it. However, there are some potential issues that may occur with VPS hosting. The main disadvantage from a financial standpoint is that it is more expensive than shared hosting. For sites that do not need a dedicated hosting service, the cost may be prohibitive. While it is not as expensive as dedicated, it is also typically a lot more expensive than shared.

From a services standpoint, though, the issue can be a lot greater. Some web hosts offer VPS hosting but do not allocate the resources appropriately. This may cause problems down the line if a particular site uses its resources at peak levels. The reason for this is that the web host may have over sold its space, banking on the probability that each account on the physical server will not use its allocated store of resources. However, if they do, it may cause server issues that will affect all other sites on the server. A way to combat this is to ensure that you are aware of how many virtual accounts are on the server at one time.

VPS hosting is a great bridge between shared hosting and dedicated hosting. It s main advantage is the ability to have complete control over the hosting environment as you would get in a dedicated hosting package but without the cost. There are a few issues you may encounter if the host does not handle VPS correctly but if they do and you can afford the slightly higher price, it is a great option.

Do you host the videos yourself? Why not try using a cdn service first? That may reduce your site's resources usage and actually make your site more faster.

at first you should figure out what exactly your site consuming ? if Bandwidth or Entry Process usage increasing then you Should use CDN and observe visitors by reviewing logs reports, if same IP continually consuming too much bandwidth then simply block it.
and try to optimize your DBtables on weekly basis.

That's weird. I'm getting around 2k visitors on my one site with wordpress and video player too, but never have I experience any performance issues. You should check your script to know more about how your resources are being used up.

Yes, often bad scripts are the cause of CPU abuse or lots of processes. You will have less problems if you make sure your scripts are written well

If you are looking to have more control over the applications that run your website back end it is definitely a good idea to switch to a VPS. Having the ability for running larger databases and applications along side with less limitation is also a plus. If you ever run into a scenario of your host asking you to use less inodes or any other resources, then the change should be a no brainer.
