What are some things you do on your forums to get people to sign up. More learning toward legal forums.

Instead of having just a register link, what else can be get to get them to register. Besides more content ofcourse.

Adding a banner link to register.
Hidden links so that guest couldn't see the files (only if they are like premium accounts etc.)
Showing ads to guests only and adding text link to have less ads, plz register.....

he is more leaning towards legal forums. hiding dl links would only work for warez forums :p

the register & see no ads thing works well. i've fallen for that each and every time.

It depends on the type of your forum. Are you sure that you have the content that potential users would like? If you are, work on the Index page a little bit. Put the links to the About us text, site mission text, etc. Stuff like that, so potential user could see that he really has something to do on your forum.

hide download links/disable right click/add BIG Banner to Join the site/add some ads for guests, and when they join, make it ads free for members ;) (make sure you add this announcement for your guests in Red :P

Make a few images (banner/logos) with an interesting text or some professional graphics. The text on the image could say something about what you can get if you register. You can offer something to everyone that is registering. Everyone that register can join a pool and when there has been 20 people in the pool, a winner will be picked (random, of course). The price should be something related to your website. A free account of any file host account if you are running something in that area. You can hide all kind of links and make them visible only for registered members. All coded links can be hided and only be available for registered members. If you decide to do any of the two tips above you should make sure that the guest knows that the links are only available for registered members. A very interesting welcome text might get some extra attention. People are very different and we do react on different things. Some people gives their attention to free things, some people like good graphics, some people might want to know the hidden links. If you are running a very successful website, you can most likely force every new member to register before being able to view anything that is posted on the forum. If you have some interesting material, everyone would sign up. Do some heavy advertising on larger websites. Advertise with good text and/or graphics. Everything that is professional gets more attention no matter if it's a newbie or a more advanced user that is reading.

close forum for guests, but let it open for google. All visitors from google will need to register if they want to see what they are looking for.,..

I should of said this was for legal forums only. I dont really want to force members to register if they dont want to. All I'm saying is that I just have one link to register from and I wanted to know of some ideas to change tht so its more visible.

Some ideas ive seen here are a good idea like ads for guests and none for members. Hiding the links and things like that wont work.

@ACE
We can't help you until you reveal more details about your forum. Advertising is different always, for example as others said warez forums get more users if they hide the links to guests/search engines. While porn forums get more users if they force users to register after they read more than 10 threads. If you have just an average general discussion forum, it'll be kinda hard. But adding more sections for discussing about current shows on tv, music, video games, and advertising it via Facebook would work.

If your Facebook plan works, your users will talk about your site in conversations with their friends, which would automatically complete the "get users" part.

Well, I dont want to focus just on my site. I want this to benefit everyone as well as me. There's already bee some good ideas for both warez forums and non warez..

But my forum is really more focused on one topic. We will leave it at that.

I will be trying the facebook idea as well and the twitter.

1. Limit them to read only 10 threads if they're not registered.
2. Don't allow them to view "code" or some other tags.
3. Have a "VIP" or registered section.
4. Display some "Register now!" ads.
5. Show some text like "Register, it takes only 30 seconds!". It made me register a few times.

All in all, it's your forums content that will make users register.

You could try this methode:

A lot of pop-up for guests and non pop-up for registered members.

Resulting in a new registration. Or they leave the site (would have happened anyway).

You can also earn a slunt of money.
