After several weeks of anticipation, an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 is finally here. The Chronic Dev Team has released the jailbreak for Mac users in the form of Greenp0ison “Absinthe,” with Windows and Linux versions coming very soon.

Furthermore, the iPhone Dev Team will soon release an alternative command-line interface (CLI) to help in debugging any occasional errors should they occur. Supported firmwares for the iPhone 4S are iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1, while the iPad 2 must be running iOS 5.0.1 exclusively.

Keep reading, there’s lots of important information about this jailbreak…

After most of the bugs are found, the iPhone Dev Team will release an updated version of redsn0w for Mac and Windows with support for this new jailbreak. The team stresses the importance of jailbreaking at your own risk, as the injection method for this untethered “Corona” jailbreak for A5-powered devices has never been used before.

Nevertheless, we’re very appreciative of the tremendous amount of time and dedication that the “dream team,” which includes Joshua Hill (@p0sixninja), Yiduo Wang (@planetbeing), and @MuscleNerd, has put towards releasing this jailbreak for the community. iOS hacker @pod2g in particular deserves a tremendous round of applause for making all of this possible. Way to go guys!

ERROR:?

If you are getting an “error establishing a database connection” message when trying to jailbreak your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 with the recently released Absinthe, iOS hacker Yiduo Wang (@planetbeing) has a solution for you.

In your device’s settings, navigate to Settings > Network > VPN > ON. Although you will achieve an error by doing this, your device will quickly reboot and the jailbreak process should be fully functional. You might still have to open the Absinthe web clip to resume the jailbreak.

UPDATE!
Absinthe Receives Minor Update to Fix Overloading

Since there are potentially several thousand users attempting to download and make use of Absinthe at once, it has often churned out error messages such as “error establishing a database connection.” Thankfully, the Chronic Dev Team’s jailbreaking tool for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 has received a minor update to version 0.1.2-2 to address issues with overloading.

Prior to the update, the Absinthe web clip that is installed onto your iPad 2 or iPhone 4S had pointed towards a dedicated website responsible for carrying out the jailbreak. Now, it is directed towards the Greenpois0n website instead, which can handle the workload more effectively.

Does not work :(

Remember currently for mac and mac only. [Updates:

If the Absinthe webclip shows “Error establishing a database connection”, please go to Settings, turn on VPN and wait instead.
Toggle VPN only AFTER Absinthe says it’s done, or it will not work.
VPN SHOULD error and then reboot soon. If it does not, rerun Absinthe!
If you get a strange problem, we advise you to restore your iPhone with iTunes, if you can (i.e. if you’re not on 5.0 waiting for an eventual 4S unlock).]
