The government is to consider introducing new filters for online pornography, in a move likely to be fiercely resisted by internet service providers.

Prime minister David Cameron is expected to consult in the next few weeks on whether ISPs, such as BT and Virgin media, should block adult material as a default for customers.

The tough measures will mean that millions of internet users will be forced to opt in if they wish to view pornography online.

The prime minister has intervened following pressure from a parliamentary inquiry into online child protection, which warned that explicit material was having a harmful effect on children.

It is understood that the consultation will take the form of an independent review of a series of options for filtering pornography online, but will not result in a government green paper.

ISPs and advocacy groups are likely to try to face down the measures over fears of online censorship.

A spokesman for the Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA), the industry body representing companies including Google and Yahoo, said on Friday that it would oppose default filtering because it was not the most effective measure and was easy to get around.

The campaign for greater curbs against online porn has been led by the Tory MP Claire Perry, who chaired the independent inquiry into online child protection last month.

Ofcause, this wont stop kids from looking at porn since it's not that hard to use a proxy or VPN and it's almost impossible (without taking the internet offline or only allowing people to view the sites the government whitelists) to filter _all_ adult websites, you can simply go to reddit's nsfw section for example (since it's not a porn site in general).

P.S. David Cameron is a absolute prick for introducting censorship back into the UK country.

It's funny how the media portray censorship thesedays as a bad thing, yet they along with the government in the UK censored like crazy during the war and on top of that used a considerable amount of propaganda.

'Democracy' they say :))

never understood why is porn a taboo.
We all have sex
We all have fantasies
We all love sex

If someone doesn't want to visit porn sites, good for him, but why forbidding entire nation to do it? It's legal to shoot porn movies, but it's not legal to watch them?

it must be bad to live in uk
almost everything blocked now
no more torrent sites and now porn
i am guessing a lot of people use vpn there

This is not in force yet, they are still in discussions.
It will never work, as the UK receives an income from some Porn & Gambling sites..... Taxation.

Cameron is one of the worst Prime Ministers ever ....

The UK does NOT censor the media, its the US that does that. It got so bad there that one Editor of the Washington Post moved to London to work. He was the White House Correspondent for years and respected the UK reps there and their outspoken questions, thats why he moved to the UK.

Its that damn crook Murdoch the UK need to continue investigating and going after. He is the biggest Pirate in the world,,,,using Smart Cards for his Sky receivers.

There is no photo on your report Putin, so here is it;
