I'm a software dev that wants to diversify with some webmastering and i was wondering if anyone here would be so nice to give me some links that helped him to understand the mysteries of SEO.

found lots of niche sites about the subject googling... and it would be nice to accumulate some basic understanding of the process before hiring any seo service.

What are you trying to SEO. That's sorta important if you want to get serious into SEO. For example seoing Warez Blog is a lot different to SEO something like a custom eCommerce site.
