Being able to track traffic statistics is a huge part of being a webmaster and keeping your website going. By keeping track of your traffic, you're able to see who your audience is and modify your site to better suit those kind of visitors. Tracking your stats also helps you determine what your sources of traffic are so you are able to adjust and concentrate on the sources of traffic that are getting you big hits.

Google Analytics
Google Analytics is one of the most preferred stat-tracking tools by webmasters because it gives you a detailed report about the traffic you are getting at your website. To get it setup all you have to do is slap some small lines of code somewhere on your website and you're good to go. The dashboard does a nice job of giving you a general report of your website, telling you how much traffic you are getting as well as your traffic sources and popular content. In addition, clicking the "Visitors" tab will supply you with so much more information regarding your visitors. You are given specific statistics like total pageviews, bounce rate, time spent on site, and even visitor profiles. Going to the "Traffic Sources" section will give you more useful data. Find your top traffic sources and popular keywords used by visitors to find your website. This breakdown of traffic is exceedingly useful to a webmaster. What's more is that you're given a "Content Overview" section that will essentially breakdown what your visitors are viewing on your website and where they are going after that. You can even know the top landing and exiting pages which is very useful to a webmaster who knows how to utilize such information.

Statcounter
Statcounter is another really popular traffic tracking tool, I've talked to some website owners and they agree Statcounter is a pretty good tool. Just like in Google Analytics, you're given a small piece of code that you just have to insert somewhere on your website and then rejoice as your traffic gets tracked by Statcounter. When you enter the user area, you're present with a pretty simple yet useful presentation of your traffic stats. You are told your number of: page loads, unique visitors, and returning visitors. If you do not know what these terms mean then just scrolling down a bit will give you some explanation as to what you are looking at. You can even view a live demo of the Statcounter tracking area so you can see for yourself how useful Statcounter is!

Piwik
Piwik is definitely a unique method of web analytics because instead of just signing up on a website like Google Analytics and Statcounter, you own your website statistics. Piwik is an open-source, downloadable tracker that can be installed on your webserver for private tracking. You do still have to place a javascript code in your website like Google Analytics and Statcounter. Piwik is a really visual web analytic tool and is something I definitely urge you guys to try out. You are given details about everything, just like GA. Check out the live demo to get more information.
