However, I am not sure if the reason is the one that you said [first and last letter funda].

Its mroe to do with vowel and consonant sounds. According to some study, even if you miss some vowel sounds in a sentence, people would be able to read it. Its the consonant sounds that tells your mind what the word is.

For example:
I dnt evn knw yu, whr ar u frm?
