Joomla is a very good all-round cms and has a massive amount of extentions available for it. Many of my personal sites are based on Joomla. That being said, it is horribly bloated, even more so than WordPress.
I actually prefer WordPress and the more I use it, the more I find ways to do things that I had originally thought were only possible with Joomla. WordPress also has alot of plugins and its theme engine is very clever and easy to navigate.
I used joomla for like a year, I was really good at it, all sorts of extensions, modules, templates etc.
And the, one day, I was helping my e-pal with his website that was run on Wordpress. After that day, every project I had was run on Wordpress!
Reasons? Well, it is much more user-friendly in my opinion. I am not a 'noob' user, but UI of Wordpress simply amazed me after Joomla. Also tons of plugins, widgets, themes etc.
Yes, WordPress is still considered blogging software, but it is easily adapted to perform most, and if not all, usual cms functions.
It is definately more noob friendly, especially with the latest release, which guides you around the admin panel if you're new to it. But I think thats something that works in it's favour. The main reason I started developing with WordPress, was because it is easy to learn and the code remains reasonably consistent with each update. Joomla on the other hand, with each update, can require alot of editing if you have custom code.
