when did the bar get so low with video hosts?

I still remember the days when a video hosts had a 1 minute downtime they would give bonuses for a day so people don't leave them.
nowadays downtimes for hours, shaving, "maintenance" and etc and they don't even acknowledge it here until we bug them about it.
is this because of lack of competition?
