Well, I've been thinking lately. What I've been doing over the past month, will it even help me to get a career in the future. All I'm working with right now is Photoshop. I love working on the web, I've always been interested ever since I was introduced to it. I would like to go to college for Web Design next year but I want to be prepared.

Here is some of my works; jvex.jobrary.com

I know it's not great but I'm practicing. What kind of skills does the above average web designer have these days. What programs are they working in. What coding languages should they be learning.

I just feel lost at the moment, what I should be trying to learn/improve on... [meh]

I'd advice you to keep practising in Photoshop... Get to know each and every feature, once you are proficient enough, try to slice em and convert to html.
But for now, you should try new stuffs in Photoshop, which is more than enough to start.

Apart from using PS regularly to practise you should also look out for newer trends in the GFX industry. Join sites like deviantart which give you great exposure.

Well every one is recommending you to learn this, use that etc etc. which are definitely necessary but one of the most important thing people often forget to recommend is Creativity. You need to be creative to become a perfect web designer. Web designer are like scientists who bring innovations in the field of web designing. Play with the skills you have to create new things and give a chance for people to remember you :)
