Hey everyone,

As none of you know, i'm starting up a company to offer managed websites for small companies that don't have the tech background to create them. We'll be hosting the sites as well, and so we decided a dedicated sever is in order. Now, we'll probably have some extra space left, and we'll have to go offshore regardless for a few of my sites (WarezRank included). After doing a few searches on here and in general, i've decided to go with AltusHost.com's SM-5 package, which I will be ordering later this week or early next.

What I basically need is to know who here has used AltusHost before and what your biggest issues with them were. I did use the search feature and found that it seems most issues were with shared plans, and dealt with other clients using leeching scripts. I want to know if anyone has other thoughts.

I've contacted the support a few times already, to ask about plan details and server location. All times the support was friendly and fast to reply. However, the search feature reveled different stories. If you're one of the people that claim bad support, care to tell why?

All in all, i'm just looking for personal experiences other past / current users have to offer. I don't like to decide things based on what Google shows... last time I did that I bought a VPS with Santrex xD

Thanks for any replies, and all help anyone can provide :P

If you are looking for a dedicated server, why go through a reseller?
I suggest just going through directly with the DC (datacenter themselves) -- Less Hassle, less problems, Sometimes even better prices / support. (sometimes)

Also, a suggestion, if you are going to start a some what "legit" company hosting other companies, you shouldn't host them on the same server as warez. Mostly for 1 - security reasons, and 2 - legal reasons.
For security, warez sites are more vulnerable to getting hacked than any "legit" website, mostly because either someone hates warez and wants to take them down, or a competitor.
For legal reasons, say if you go with a DC, no matter what DC you go with, they can still tell you please leave our servers, or we will be terminating you for such and such reasons. That will be a problem, and you will have to be financially secure to actually be able to move.

Sorry i cannot say whether altushost is good or not, have not heard many good or bad things about them. But hopefully i helped address any other problems / suggestions you wanted / needed =)

@Sandin0
Hmmmm... good point about the reseller, although i'm not entirely sure who hosts AltusHost's servers. Something to look into I suppose, thanks for the tip.

As for the other comments, I kinda agree but I don't think it'll be too big of an issue. I don't own any warez sites other than WarezRank, and the chances of it getting targeted for an attack are low. Now if I let a few friends on there, they may host a warez site or two, and that could cause an issue. The same goes for the legal, i've never gotten any type of notice about WarezRank, but I can't say what my friends may or may not do. Seeing as we are a startup company (forced school project, by the way), we don't want to have more than 1 server for start up reasons. Now if we get a few clients and things are going good, we may purchase another dedicated server, and host the clients and 'friends' separately.

Thanks for the thoughts, still time for me to look over them and think about things :-)

Well if you are on a Low Budget.

Why not just get shared hosting for the warez sites.
And for the "school" project just get a small VPS?
I am sure the sites are not going to be huge corporations.
A small VPS would be sufficient and cheaper =)
Even "onshore hosting" per say (web hosts who only allow legal content) would do!

Just my thoughts though, up to you.

Honestly spoken, the real reason why I want an offshore dedi rather than just a shared plan is simple, I haven't ever heard of any offshore host that isn't oversold. No host is perfect, I understand that. I just rather go with an offshore dedi for now and have the freedom to screw things up myself, and blame myself, not the host for it. I also have a site in planning (has been for years) which will be need to be offshore, and hopefully could use quite a bit of resources.

The school project is for a competition our teacher is requiring us to be in, and it's large scale. The finials are actually in Korea, and our company we create won't close once it's over unless we choose to. I've wanted to work with the web and make money for awhile now, so we want to jump right into large scale and not waste time upgrading later. There's 11 of us total, so a $200 monthly server is only $25 each, roughly.

Really, the ideal setup for us is a dedicated server somewhere offshore that allows us full access and the ability to host a wide variety of things. That way we can work with our clients and fill in the rest of the costs by reselling extra space we have. For now, it seems AltusHost is the best choice, from what i've seen. That's not to say it is, however :P

Thanks again for all the help, and I will be looking into the DC thought.

With regard to altus reselling, i believe they resell there luxumberg servers from server.lu

As Sandin0 mentioned it would be very adventagious to get two servers, if it was me i would get:
1) a Cheap onshore usa server ($77 a month from theplanet.com)
2) a Offshore server (depending on location wrzhost.com or server.lu)

if you have set yourself a $200 budget you could get the 2 seperate servers for that price and althought you do not technically need the two servers right now, it would put you in a far better position later, when you have clients ect.

Interesting, and thanks for sharing your review. I guess it's also good to keep in mind that with a dedicated server I wouldn't be sharing *any* resources, including connection with others, where as a VPS does.

@delboy
I believe the official stance is that both hosts use the same datacenter, although each owns their own hardware there, which keep the services separate. From the looks of it, AltusHost has better rates for our needs than server.lu. We are now looking at the option of 2 servers, but we are mostly sticking with our original idea. Thanks for the comment.

@coldabhishek
Had a glance, and it wouldn't give us too much room to grow. If we did get a customer who used a lot of bandwidth, we'd have to upgrade servers from a smaller plan to one of the bigger AMD ones, which would cost a lot. Probably;y not something we'll consider, but thanks anyway :-)

Still, if one of there services are bad, I wouldnt want to try another, but its really up to you, just my thoughts here.

Actually with Most dedicated servers you would only get a "Shared Line" included in the price, meaning you share the internet connection with other customers, unless of cource you where to purchase a "Dedicated line".

i do not believe Altus colocate, i believe they just rent the equipment straight from server.lu, i mean the spec of Altus SM-6 and Server.lu AS10000 is just to similar for it to be a coincidence, altus luxumberg servers are actually more expensive, Server.lu AS10000 = $194 Compared to Altushost SM-6 = $259.95.

I have used server.lu for a while and there network is good, there support is also quick to resolve problems.
