Betcha didn't think this day would come, but it finally has. Sony has just come clean with its next-generation PlayStation Portable. It's actually codenamed NGP and will revolve around five key concepts: Revolutionary User Interface, Social Connectivity, Location-based Entertainment, Converging Real and Virtual (augmented) Reality. It will be compatible with the PlayStation Suite and is backwards-compatible with downloadable PSP games and content from Sony's PlayStation Store.

Specs include a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 5-inch touchscreen OLED display with 960 x 544 resolution, dual analog sticks (not nubs as on the current generation), 3G, WiFi, GPS, a rear-mounted touchpad, the same accelerometer / gyroscope motion sensing as in the PlayStation Move, an electronic compass, and cameras on both the front and back. Available this holiday season. Wait... what?!

Games will come on "new media," not UMD anymore, but we're unclear on what sort of flash memory is being used. Sony's rather proud of the fact it's offering the world's first dual analog stick combo on a portable device, though we're more geeked about the quadrupling of pixel count from the original PSP.

Sony's live event has been graced by demos of some pretty popular games, including Killzone, Resistance, Little Big Planet, and Uncharted -- with the latter serving as a demo platform to show off how the NGP's rear touchpad can be used to more intuitively climb up some vines. That touch panel on the back is the same size and positioned directly under the front OLED touchscreen, which allows for some pretty sophisticated controls when using the two simultaneously.

The new console's UI will be called LiveArea, which has a bunch of vertically navigable home screens and built-in social networking through PlayStation Network. You can jump between games and the LiveArea without losing your progress and comment on your buddies' great feats of mobile gaming.

In closing its presentation, Sony trotted out Hideo Kojima to show off a cutscene from MGS 4 rendered in real time on the NGP. It was pulled directly from the PS3 version of the game and ran at 20fps, which looked very smooth indeed to our liveblogging eyes. Videos and Sony's full PR are now available below.

Market analysis's and stock markets say it's going to be a financial disaster. Free and Cheap Apps available on the App Store and the Google's Andriod Market along with Nokia's and Rim's are the future. The games on those app stores are getting better and better. These portable gaming devices are becoming extinct. For people who don't have loads of money (which is most people) they'll just go for a smartphone.

These new PSP's are expected to be really expensive too although they haven't declared a price yet. Sony really messed up in setting the price for the PS3. It was way too expensive when it was released and as a result the cheaper xBox sold way more units. The PS3 only started selling large quantities of units when it halved the price or had massive discounts. If this new PSP is expensive too their's no way it will survive financially if it has to compete with a cheaper more popular Nintendo DS (and the new Nintendo 3DS released next month) along with the constant development of smartphones and their ever increasing app stores.

Although I don't think it will happen the best thing that could happen Sony is they will be bought by Apple which is being rumored in the business world as Apple have $60 billion in cash and nothing to spend it on.

It kind of looks cool, but meh. I've got a PSP and the only game I've ever played on it is Gran Turismo. Which was a little average, but since then it's just sat in my draw. Fading away. I know they have to compete with Nintendo some how, but come on' wasn't the PSP a big enough failure?

They may have sold a lot of units but it had nothing on the DS. Should focus on making their PS3 better :P 3G is an interesting feature for the new PSP.

If Apple were to buy sony, Oh god we would have so GREAT eletronics (tv,consoles, etc)

Apple should just launch a gaming console.

No they shouldn't. Last thing we want is an overpriced console.

Imagine a console were you could download apps and stuff? :D

I think the XBOX is heading that way as I read a rumor that they might be announcing APPS at this years E3. They already added BING so we shall see.

And I hate to see when companies make a handheld console as they should just dedicate their time to the primary console

Which if true would suck. I think the old one had a game period of 6 hours or so? 10 hours would be the sweet spot. The DS seems to last quite a long time.
