Secure a server?

Hi, I am going to buy a Dedicated server soon (First time =)).

And I am going to install cPanel for hosting my friends and my forum.
How can I secure it against "Wannabe" hackers ??.. I want to keep Bruotforce out of the system and hackers..

And how can I stop DDoSing?

I really don't have much money so please don't add things that costs like 150$++ yearly

btw, does someone know if I am able to change username? I really don't like to have this username..

the important thing is install firewall on ur server like CSF and the scure ur SSH like change port for SSH

csf doesnt really do anything you depending on the attack best getting one that provide a built in firewall
