How to stable my keyword ranking?

I have a question about how to stable my good ranking that my top keywords are on 1 page where competition very high and I want to know now how to stay at no 1 page for long time or for forever. What should I do and If I will stop work for some days then is it possible to stay on same position or if I will do regular work for these keywords then is it any bad affect for that keywords or it will go more up if I will start work continue.?
