Keyword searching has turned into something of an obsession for me since I discovered wjunction :D. I found a really good article covering the basics on keyword searching at Web Design Manchester and the author allowed me to re-write it to use on forums. Keyword Research Tools
So you’ve had a great idea for a website and want to find out if there is demand for such a site. Your next step then, is to conduct some keyword research; to find out if people are searching for you keyword. Researching keywords can be easier than you think by using the free tools compiled below.
Google Keyword Tool
Google’s keyword search is arguably the best of the bunch; it allows you to search through multiple keywords at once whilst specifying specific locations and languages. The results page provides valuable insights including the amount of competition a specific keyword has and both global and local search amounts for the keyword.
Bing Keyword Research
Microsoft Bing’s keyword research tool is a new-comer to the pack but nevertheless still an excellent tool which can be used to gain insights into your chosen keyword. Bing’s keyword research tool allows you to mine searches conducted using Bing to understand what certain demographics are searching for; again like Google’s keyword search, Bing’s keyword tool is free.
WordStream Keyword Search
WordStream Keyword Search is a long standing keyword research tool which has provided many web- developers with intelligent keywords which can be used to improve their website. WordStream Keyword Search provides you with both an estimation of how many Google searches are conducted a month regarding your keyword, and also an estimation of how many search are being conducted from other search engines (such as Bing, Yahoo and AOL).
Ubersuggest
Unlike the other keyword tools which provide traffic estimates and competition regarding keywords, Ubersuggest provides you with keyword suggestions. Ubersuggest can be used to search websites, videos, pictures and news sites to help you develop relevant keywords. You can also customise Ubersuggest’s search results by specifying what the keyword will be used for – ie: a website name, blogspot or image.
Conclusions
If the four tools listed above are used effectively they can be a formidable in developing excellent keywords. Both Google, Bing and WordStream’s keyword tools can be used to research your initial keyword then Ubersuggest can be used to develop this keyword to move into more niches surrounding your initial keyword.
