@OP, the screenshots that you've provided are for the member area. Kindly provided demo/dummy logins too, if you can.

Also, if you've got a bit of CSS knowledge -> Install Firebug and mess around with the styles

I'm running on Win XP! Tried to download IE9 but XP doesn't show in the OS list

have you tried IE8 i think they are the same..,

They are not. You can use IE9 to behave like IE8, but not the opposite.
