FTP Delete Command

Hello
i want to delete a directory(include files). please give me the command for that
when i try the mdelete it asking me with a "?" like

"ftp> mdelete dir_name
mdelete dir_name/newdire?"

why not use rm -rf ?

When it asks with a ? You type Y and enter

I did ,but not working it just going to next line and nothing get deleted

hum.
should the command for ftp folder-delete not be
rmdir (linke the windows-thing?)

or try
mdelete *

but i'm not shure if this will work recursevly.
there's not a single FTP-Client (which i remember) who does delte like this - they always goes within the directoreis and delete the files first.
