Dominating small niches

Is it really worth it to dominate keyword phrases that only get about 1K searches per month? Even if you had 10 keywords, that's only 10K searches. That's not even clicks. Maybe you will get 50 clicks from 1K searches. 50 Clicks doesn't seem like enough to even get 1 or 2 sales, I know because I have to get hundreds of clicks from Adwords to get 1 sale sometimes.

You should be looking for stuff that gets around 20,000 searches..

Disagree with DEViANCE to a degree on this one. Your going about targeting the wrong way. The idea is to have different pages on your site targeting different keywords.

Let's take something really stupid as an example like Tomatoes. One page could be dedicated to Tomato Soup, another to growing tomatoes, another to types of tomatoes, another to cutting tomatoes, another to the color of tomatoes, types of tomatoes, maybe feeding tomato plants, etc.

Now on the page of cutting tomatoes let's say you rank number one your not going to get many hits on that as it's very niche. Same thing for the color of tomatoes. It's a very niche and not that popular search. Same for types of tomatoes etc. Something like the tomato soup could be hard to rank number one for but it would get more searches. You'd probably find yourself on page 5-10 for this and getting very little traffic. The thing is though if you start adding all the niche pages together they all add up and it can bring you in more traffic than something like the Tomato Soup even if you were number one for it. Niche pages in general are more easy to rank higher for as their is less competition.

Notice how I'm not trying to rank at all for the word tomato or tomatoes as that's just near impossible. This is generally the way people aim to get traffic by going for the big keyword but unless you have a large, well established site this won't work.

Then you have something called Keyword dominance where you own all the top 10 searches for a single keyword niche. This is what I do but that's a whole other tutorial I'll post another day.
