Yeah - to buy from most registrars domains are around-abouts $10, but once once is taken it's value is not set. If there's a domain that was bought from a registrar for $10 it can be worth $1,000 to someone that wants it. The value if usually based on length and keywords, also how many people...

The wonders of eBay! I picked up several nice domains for 99p each recently, transferred them to namecheap so they have a free ssl certificate, free whois guard and free push to whoever wants to buy them! I have a number of domains for sale, 2 are very good and I'm sure are worth triple figures...
