check the installation instruction for that sitemap generator there should some chmod or smth.or just chmod it temporarily so that it can write in that directory and then get the permission back to...

Free hosting wouldn't even care about what you put on your server as long as you don't remove the ads and the banner from your index.

If you have a dedi or a VPS check what you got running on your server/user accounts/ftp client/install a firwall and a rootkit finder.(if you can't do that ask your host)

I meant you can get newer versions of plugins in case of a security flaw or smth(I mean faster than other unofficial websites).
And do you have any access to your server.(Contacted your hoster yet??)
You should use a non nulled vBulletin (or at least nulled by trusted teams [vBteam.info]).
Use only official products release(vBteam.info,vbulletin.com).
try to keep your scripts updated and don't install any Release Candidate or Pre-releases(these are for testing purposes).
Man I want to clarify some points:
-This so called hacker used a vuln in your script OR on your server.
-If you are runing some old vBulletin or you have installed a vulnerable plugins or products (and they are a lot) he must have used it.
