1) The guy with the ball is distorted;
2) There are too many references to football. Imagine the Apple's logo having an image of an apple and at the side the word 'Apple' with the 'p' replaced by apples. It would suck, right? Too much heavy, too much nooby.
In logos, less is more. If there're too many elements, you'll damage the natural empathy between the user and the product;
3) Dont overdo. Using belevel to make logos is a no-no, specially if it's not very subtle.
The same thing with the shadow. They are awesome in many ways, but if you exagerate, it looks f*cked up.

A good way to learn how to do logos - being a photoshop/illustrator guru is not enough - is to analize popular logos. Take a look at their gradient, color scheme, highlights, shadows and above all, pay attention on how everything just looks good together.
