Does anyone know the best way to get the best performance using Ubuntu?

I'm having several issues using my 5970, HD playback issues, including around 7-9 FPS in games.

I've tried everything I possibly could. could someone please assist me?

all people have problems with ati coz ati just dont wants to cooperate with linux..... nvidia card always worked me with no problems.

Important;
If you absolutely must use Ubuntu, you should at least update to the latest version (11.04).

How:
type "sudo do-release-upgrade" in the terminal

----

Is your primary to play games that are not Linux native, then you can well reinstall Windows, saving you and us too much trouble.

To play HD material should be no problems, which player do you use? which driver do you use? what format are the files in?

I'm trying to play mainly steam games, they don't want to work correctly. Last time i used Ubuntu, everything worked nicely.

The main playback issues I'm receiving, is with 1080P youtube videos, The whole screen becomes very laggy when ever, I start playing a 1080P video.

Including low FPS - During playing games.

Try, "sudo apt-get update", "sudo apt-get upgrade", "sudo update-manager -c" and let me know if you see it.

I'm also using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and got similar problem. I am sure you did installed un-necessary updates. Just remove those updates and everything will be alright. An other solution is, for better performance, change your interface to kbuntu! (After trying 10001 commands, I tried this and it did worked).

Then you're well on your way. First apt-get update will look like that you have done, and then enter:

Code:
sudo apt-get upgrade

Then you are asked if you want to update to the latest version of the distribution.

Nothing.

May I know what games your trying to play on Ubuntu? My laptop also has a ATI card, and it works horrible, it's always running hot and using too much power.

I strongly dislike ATI's performance on Ubuntu/Linux
