Seems to me that they did the right thing. It used to be okay around 2011 since it's a good way for actual uploaders of their own releases to get something back, but too many mediocre and shady torrent uploaders jumped the bandwagon. Through the years, incompetent torrent spammers who get releases that's already in the same site only to make a new torrent out of it and try to earn on releases that weren't really theirs infested the torrent sites. Those types of people just made torrent sites look spammy, and never made actual contributions since they're only recycling duplicate uploads from actual uploaders in the scene and compete with them.

I did my own rips and re-encodes, worked 16 hours a day to bring the content that you can't find anywhere.
Now all you have are automatic dumpers, that steal from one site and post on another in bulk.
I couldn't make 20$ a month to pay for that small seedbox, and that was too much for the mods.
Recently I tried to surf 1337x without adblocker and it was impossible, popups wouldn't let me catch a breath. So I call it a hypocrisy.
As for the leechers, I have tried everything to get some support from them. All those people couldn't bother to just click a few times and just help me pay for hosting and seedbox.
There is very rarely a "thanks" and they just leech and leech and everything comes free to them on public trackers.
I stopped uploading 8 months ago and my torrents are still generating a lot of traffic every day and are being downloaded and seeded still.
All I want to say is, there are a lot of quality enthusiastic uploaders like myself, some of them are my friends from all over, who were shut down by this decision.
This decision has shut down human uploaders in favor of bot uploaders, who essentially are what is called a "dumper".
In my opinion that is not good for the scene. I never wanted to get rich, but the misunderstanding between uploader and downloader is unbelievable.
I mean.. How can one download every day and not give a shit about how much time and money someone has invested so you could enjoy free content. And how I ended up being an enemy...

War for supremacy between Piratebay and 1337x lasted for years.
We were all good soldiers, and we fought for 1337x.
I was uploading to 1337x when their traffic was only 10% of piratebay's traffic.
When 1337x has reached its goal, they dumped us like trash. Replaced us with scripts.
It's all war for traffic and money my dear torrenters. Keep it real yo.
