I've been wondering this for a time, and just wanted to see if anyone have any good info.

So lets start of saying that we talk dedicated servers with software raid setup and automated OS reinstalls.
I've been with some server resellers and almost all offer OS reinstalls thru their client area.

Usually resellers have the option to choose any raid included with the server when making an order.
But then we come to the client area where we can reinstall our server when needed.
Usually, there is only one thing to choose on this page, and its the OS we would like, for example, Ubuntu 16.04.

What happens when we make this reinstall, is that the server will come reinstalled but with no raid at all.
So if we would like a reinstall to, say with raid 0, as we first ordered the server with, then we need to make a support ticket.

This might not be any strange but I feel its pretty annoying when I usually would like raid 0 on my server and everytime I would do a reinstall, it must go thru the support tickets, when there usually is an automated os reinstall available..

Is it hard for resellers/providers to make a OS reinstall function that can let you choose both OS and any software raid??

But, I did actually found one where this exist, and it is with eqservers.com, where their reinstall page looked like this:
https://imgur.com/Zp9v3Vw

This is exactly what im talking about, this is how I would like all server resellers to have.
The bad thing with eqserver when i tested this some week ago, it doesnt work at all, nothing happens.
Again it had to go thru the ticket system and there were some hours of waiting time to get my server reinstalled.
Maybe its just some issues they have with it. Where i dont hope they have it like that just to look good..

So why have not all reseller this function? (Where they offers raid setup when order but not with reinstall)
Do you even know anyone more except eqservers who have this function? (Well, where it works too)

Thanks

the order is just an instruction, order is usually not processed automaticaly to setup your server without staff interaction. By ordering with some raid, you just telling the staff how to manually install it.
Ofcourse there are exceptions like some bigger providers who automaticaly provision servers for you.
I know servercomplete.com offers raid choice on reinstall and the whole reinstall process is automated. I am happy with them.

This need custom works with their current reseller Module or the Inbuilt Module. Not so strange but not all are offering Raid config on automation.
For safest and risk free installation, I would recommend you to go with ticket support.

Also be noted that any provider will not like this fact when a client will feel bad to open a simple ticket. Just telling you this.

I don't think you are re-installing a lot or something. At the end of the day, I wish you get things resolved.

I can understand your pain :)

The provider of my choice lets me boot into a recovery system and upload my own image. I wish more server providers would do this.

Except IPMI is shit (excuse my french). :D Besides being mostly unusable, it is also not at all secure. Do you use IPMI?

Thanks for the replies.

Well, i dont have access to KVM or things like that, its an extra costs to include that, but I feel I can live without it.

I was more thinking, if its a simple ticket, how if I was starting reselling servers and must do a ticket each time a server OS is needed for anyone.
With a lot of servers then it can become some tickets for this, maybe the provider gets tired of this and tells me to pay extra for KVM and do everything myself each time?

Anyway, I can understand its safest way to do raid 0 installs manually, maybe its hard work to make this automated as providers usually dont have this included.

As an adviser, i would ask you to do a contact with your provider. They should understand your situation & demands. Otherwise, you should have your freedom to move to someone else.

Also, Are you talking about Linux OS or Windows OS with Raid?

Cheers
