WhatsApp is becoming more and more popular in mobile communication. Do you think FB bought it lead by the threat that it's becoming the new Facebook?

I dont think so that whatsapp will be the alternate of Facebook. Moreover I don't think it can beat Facebook in popularity also.

Sure, they're different. However, they can still very much compliment each other. For example, whatsapp is extremely used in mobile communication in some European countries, such as Spain.

Whatsapp has about 600 mln users and was bought by Facebook in February, I was astonished at first, as Whatsapp was prosperring just fine, but it might have been the right move on their part, as they got $22 billion!
I was scared that whatsapp might somehow merge with the messenger app, but fortunately nothing happened. We'll see how it progresses.
I just hope Facebook won't take over every app we use...

Sure, but Google and Bing are not owned by the same company as far as I know. While whatsapp and facebook may as well soon merge into one, which seems unlikely in the case of Google and Bing :)

I find it that WhatsApp is only popular among those who live in countries outside the USA or those who live in a country and want to communicate with someone outside their country. Here in America the only people I see using WhatsApp is people who use to talk with people outside the USA.

It's just marketing, Youtube was going viral and also turned out to be a good search engine. So google bought it because they dont wanted to be No.2 on the list :p
Same here, Whatspp is going viral so facebook bought it easy!

FB bought it because it's a popular messenger. They don't care what messenger you use, so long as you use one of theirs. Now since they own that, chances are you're using one of theirs. If you go by the numbers game.

It's the same reason they bought instagram. People used instagram for photos. FB wants to be known for photos since it's kinda their thing on FB. They don't care what you use, so long as it's owned by them. So they bought the popular competition.
