Recently, All Ubuntu and Gnome users across the globe have seen changes to their desktop in the recent few months. From the loss to the minimize and maximize button to the new launcher/sidebar. To me, Ubuntu trying to go mainstream is just a fail and synaptic removal makes my statement reinforced. GNOME trying to push people to use "workspaces" is just ridiculous. It has come to the conclusion that KDE is my only option but wait! Things like Empathy integration caught my eye on Unity and "Activities" in GNOME. I don't know whether to make up my mind now. Unity or GNOME? Social or Shell?

p.s. I'm using GNOME 3 at the moment because of the shell and managed to get my minimize and maximize buttons back. Though I miss the empathy integration that was on Unity. I'm still confused which DE to stay at. I feel like switching to one then the other and vice versa.

I tried Ubuntu 11.04 recently, loved it, but due to some reason my laptop's temperatures were too high so i switched back to Win 7.

I used Unity for 1 day, and overall as a windows user i think it was awesome. Although it doesn't offer as much customization as a Linux user would want, its ease of use is really a +1 for me.
 
Every GUI provided by Ubuntu is really cool (much more than windows).
And besides that, Linux is not about GUI. It's functionality and magic is in running programs. GUI is just waste of RAM.
But much practice is needed if you want to be able to do linux with little or no GUI.

Unity looks great, but I will stick with GNOME.
btw, I use Debian :) I adore it
