SSH tunnelling may work, but it doesn't take the stress off the origin server like a proper NGiNX reverse proxy would.
It could also be done using varnish.
There is a better/cheaper alternative to a Managed VPS called an Elastic Site, which is effectively a "shared" server set up as a shared server, but resources are dedicated, so if you need 4GB of memory and 2CPUs or maybe even 24GB of RAM and 12CPUs you can choose your resources.
Elastic sites...
Find a LiteSpeed host and use the LiteSpeed plugin.
It's faster than anything else out there.
+1 for optimised images on a CDN.
Also good to have a host which can provide multi-CPU accounts, so you can scale if you get even more visitors.
In all probability the shared hosting will be faster.
1GB of memory will not run a full hosting stack very quickly, as there is no room in memory for caching the filesystem and memory is 1000s of times faster than disk.
Do read the shared host's TOS (terms of service) as Warez links or hosting...

Unfortunately managed hosting support can differ greatly between hosts.
On some hosts, they will let you have root, but still, help you fix things if you break them.
Others will insist on not letting you have root and will help you install scripts where root access is required.
It will always...
I disagree with the RAM point.
The more RAM you have the more files you are hosting will be cached in RAM.
RAM is thousands of times faster than even SSD's.
If you don't have enough RAM your I/O could be 1000's of times too slow.
I also disagree about LiteSpeed. It is just as fast as nginx...
Normal shared hosting is OK until you get to a certain number of visitors a day, where the resources required to keep your site up are more than a shared host is willing to give you for the standard outlay.
There are a number of options when you outgrow standard shared hosting.
1. Find a web...
We've been serving customers pages with HTTP/2 for years using LiteSpeed and we think it's great as it uses fewer server resources and gets the pages and static content to the customers faster.
