    Why does Google Analytics shows high bounce rate?

    Because your home page is often visited more than other web pages.

    you should build strong internal linking in website to reduce bounce rate

    When the returning visitors are increased from home page , So bounce rate will increased.

    if a user spends more time on the homepage (without going to other pages on the site), does that reduce the bounce rate?

    Update your website with strong internal linking So bounce rate will be reduced.

    I'm surprised nobody mentioned it yet.... but, with all the referral spam going on, your bounce rate likely isn't as bad as you think.

    Check your referrals and see how many come from sketchy sources, create a segment in Google Analytics to filter them out, and presto, you will see your bounce rate actually isn't as bad as you thought.
