There are different coins with different mining algorithms:
Bitcoin, Litecoin - ASIC mining
Ethereum and most of the coins - GPU Mining
Monero - CPU Mining

If you have a 1080 Ti lying around, Then Yes!
Else there is No point in GPU mining at the moment. Antminer S9 is the best hardware you can get to mine.

If your GPU is really that much strong then yes it's worth it. But still I would say it's best to go with Antminer. Antminer is the best available hardware for mining. If you don't go with the technology and the market then I think you can't keep up. All the best with your mining.

Monero can be mined with GPU's to and even in dual mode GPU + CPU.
