He's generalizing a bit, that's true. But all these Twitter, Facebook, Google+, directory submission, backlinks and all other SEO/Traffic related services really are scam in a way. Of course, if you buy certain number of Twitter followers - you will get all of them, but will they be legitimate Twitter users? NO! Those accounts are automatically generated, just as the Facebook "Likes" and "Friends" services. Google+ service is even worse, especially if you use the websites where you "exchange" +1's in order for someone to +1 your site. By doing so you're putting your Google account (and all associated services) at risk - Why would anyone +1 let's say 100 unrelated websites in a day? Just compare that 1 day with the next week, next month, it all adds up.

Directory submission is even a bigger myth when it comes to success, same goes for the backlink services - they're in reality just spam comments on blogs and profiles with signatures on forums with decent Google PR.

If you want your website to grow naturally, without useless and spammed backlinks, you certainly will ignore such services.

If you're in need of backlinks, you can always buy a backlink on some website for a certain amount of time (1/2 years in advance) which is a way better investment btw.
