Driver tried to snort cocaine on highway, court hears

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. — A 41-year-old uninsured driver tried to snort a line of cocaine on the highway before leading police on a pursuit, court heard Thursday.

Harvey Orr, of Kincardine, Ont., pleaded guilty in provincial court for failing to stop for police, possessing cocaine and driving while disqualified and uninsured.

Crown attorney Paula Thompson said a provincial police officer spotted Orr driving erractically on Hwy. 115 on May 15.

A check revealed the van's licence plates had expired and belonged on another vehicle. The officer pulled Orr's van over and as he walked up to the van it took off.

When speeds hit 160 km/hr the officer called off the chase, court heard.

He was able to see the van exit the highway and pull into a residential area, where the driver got out and tried to run away.

Orr, who has an artificial left leg, was limping badly and didn’t get far.

Police found powdered cocaine scattered across the front seats and dash of the van, court heard.

Orr told police he had been partying the night before and was attempting to snort cocaine while driving on the highway, Thompson said.

Orr denied making that statement in court.

Justice Robert Beninger adjourned the sentence to Sept. 5 to allow Orr to deal with ongoing medical issues. Orr appeared in court in a wheelchair, one leg bandaged. He is missing his left leg below the knee.
